Microsoft partners with IISc, IIT-M to start summer schools

BANGALORE: Microsoft Research India has started its Research Summer Schools,
as part of its efforts to promote better computer education in the country.

Microsoft Research Summer schools will be held annually, helping participants
learn from leading international experts and network with the global research
community. The schools will introduce students and young researchers to
important areas such as cryptography, algorithms and complexity.

Through its External Research and Programs (ER&P) group, Microsoft
Research India partnered with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore
and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to start the summer school
to focus the research on new areas.

The school will be held at the IISc campus between May 22 and June 10, 2006.

“The school will consist of lectures given by leading experts in the fields
of cryptography, algorithms and security. It has already attracted faculty
members, senior undergraduate students, graduate students and research scholars.
The lectures at the summer school are all leaders in their fields and are
recognized the world over for their expertise,” said P Anandan, managing
director, Microsoft Research.

The summer school is expected to have 40 internees this year from academic
institutions across India and abroad.

“Our objective is to enhance research pool and encourage basic research. We
would also like to integrate talent among the Indian researchers who are already
well advanced in their domain and are globally recognized too,” said
Ramaratnam Venkatesan, Head-Crytpography, security and Algorithm.
