The 51-year-old New Zealander will also serve as vice president and will hold the position as of January 1.

He replaces Ray Young, who will become GM's vice president of international operations.

Liddell had worked as Microsoft CFO since 2005 and announced his departure in late November. He has also held the top financial post at International Paper Company. In New Zealand, he was chief executive of Carter Holt Harvey, the country's second-largest listed company.
