BANGALORE: JupiterResearch, a division of Jupitermedia Corporation has announced that the sweet spot for capacity of portable music players by online consumers is 1,000 songs.

Based on a JupiterResearch online consumer survey, the new research report ‘Portable Media Devices–Beyond Music’ states that 90 percent of consumers who maintain a music collection on their PC have no more than 1,000 songs in their collection and that 77 percent of consumers interested in purchasing a portable media player would want a portable music player with a capacity of 1,000 songs.

The report also concluded that about 45 percent of online users interested in buying a portable media device are interested in video functionality on that device. This interest will ultimately create market demand for larger capacity players that can hold more than 1,000 songs enabling users to store video as well as music. The report elaborates on the factors that will be critical to the commercial success of next-generation media players.

Giving further details JupiterResearch VP and research director, Michael Gartenberg said, "This report goes a long way towards explaining success of vendors that have focused on capacities of 4-5 gigabytes that hold approximately 1,000 songs and also explains why others have done so poorly with lower capacity devices." According to him, vendors would need a clear understanding of consumer preferences like these to capitalize on the promising new opportunity.
