Matsushita also said on Thursday it has formed a cross-licensing agreement with Samsung in the field of semiconductors.

Matsushita and Samsung have sued and counter-sued each other since 2002 in the United States and Japan, claiming infringement of microchip patents.

Electronics makers in Asia have seen a series of patent-related legal tussles in recent years as they increasingly focus on intellectual property to survive fierce competition.

Shares in Matsushita ended the morning session up 4.8 percent at 2,170 yen ahead of the announcement, while Samsung was up 3.5 percent at 591,000 won.
