The adoption of the latest technology according to the requirements is very important, as it keeps changing and becomes outdated very fast, Parag Kar, senior director-government affairs (India and SAARC) of the company, told a press conference here today, while demanding the government to allocate the available 3G spectrum at the earliest.

He said that the spectrum is available in the country and hence it should be allocated.

Kar opined that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has done its job regarding spectrum allocation in such a way so as to motivate operators to adopt 3G. However, the government has to give the nod for allocation, he added.

“The key concern in India is to enable connectivity and WiMax has poor performance for voice and data, both of which are required for a profitable business,” Dr Nikhil Jain, chief technology advisor, India, QUALCOMM, said, while comparing 3G with WiMax. “Allocation of 3G-spectrum will increase the capacity as well as leverages 2G growth. The existing infrastructure has to be upgraded and the cost incurred for upgrading is very minimal. 3G-spectrum is multi-dimensional.”

Jain added that the upgrading encompasses multiple services, more capacity, at minimum cost with ubiquity.

Currently, one billion people in the world have 3G coverage and access to over 150 3G networks. Over 85 device and infrastructure vendors are designing innovative 3G products.

Jain estimated that 3G would have over 1.4 billion subscribers by 2011, compared to 39 million for WiMax.
