SAN FRANCISCO: Advanced Micro Devices Inc., the No. 2 microprocessor maker, increased its market share to 15.3 percent at the end of 2005 from 9.6 percent a year earlier, chief executive Hector Ruiz has said.

That was 3.4 percentage points higher than the end of the third quarter, Ruiz said, a rise that is more than triple what rival Intel Corp. has estimated AMD gained in the fourth quarter. Intel said on Tuesday it thought it had lost a point of market share to AMD.

Ruiz was speaking to analysts on a conference call shortly after AMD reported fourth-quarter financial results that reversed a year-ago loss and sent the stock up 10 percent.
