The addition of iPad support allows DBAs to remotely manage their SQL Server environment via an iPad device when 3G or Wifi coverage is available said a press release.

RockSolid is a SQL Server management platform that is designed to monitor and manage DBA tasks from small sites through to very large sites with thousands of production instances, it added.

It further added, the RockSolid product mitigates common SQL Server DBA issues through predictive issue avoidance and the automation of issue resolution. The integration of iPad support allows DBAs to more easily, and more quickly, respond to issues raised by RockSolid for their attention.

“Database support is by its very nature a 24x7 activity. DBAs are used to being on call after hours, but this has typically meant carrying a laptop and 3G device or restricting how far they go from home while they are on call” says RockSolid SQL Director, Tony Bain.

“RockSolid’s iPad support gives DBAs the ability to manage their SQL Server environment from a much smaller and more mobile device. The freedom this provides is tremendous, but this also results in faster response and resolution” says Tony.

The Apple iPad is not the first mobile device RockSolid SQL has trialed for use in remote DBA support. “We have looked at a number of devices from various mobile phones, Blackberry devices and the Apple iPhone. We found the form factor was too small to be useful to us for anything more than alert notifications.”

“The Apple iPad on the other hand is large enough for routine work to be carried out without it becoming tedious, and small enough for the device to be easily carried” says RockSolid SQL Director and Red Rock Consulting CEO Jonathan Rubinsztein
