KUALA LUMPUR: Maxis Communications Bhd, Malaysia's biggest cellphone company, said it would make an announcement on Friday related to Indian mobile operator Aircel Limited.

The announcement would be made at a briefing at 0915 GMT, Maxis spokeswoman Tan Wai Fong said. She declined to give any details.

Maxis said last week it was in discussions with India operators, including Aircel Limited and that it was seeking to expand in emerging markets with good growth potential.

Indian media have reported that Maxis was considering buying a stake in Chennai-based Aircel.

Maxis, which has the biggest share of the mobile market in Malaysia, and rival Telekom Malaysia Bhd are scouring the Asia-Pacific region for acquisition opportunities as their home market approaches saturation.
