Maharashtra notches 10 mn unique ID registrations

MUMBAI, INDIA: Maharashtra has completed one crore enrolments for Aadhaar, or the unique identification number (UID) to be assigned to every Indian, an official said here Wednesday.

The figure was notched through 3,700 enrollment stations that are operational all over the state since the beginning of this year.

The ongoing campaign, termed as a "technology marvel", will see the identity of each Indian being added to a permanent database that can be accessed from anywhere in the country.

The UID is a 12-digit number and registration is free of charge and compulsory for all. Citizens can call helpline number 1800 180 1947 for details of an enrolment centre near their locality.

Forms can be collected from enrolment centres and can also be downloaded from website http://aadhaar.maharashtra.gov.in/.

All the sub-districts and villages shall be covered under Aadhaar in a phased manner and the project implementation is expected to continue for another 12 months, the official added.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chief Sonia Gandhi had launched the UID scheme in Tembli village of Nandurbar district of Maharashtra in September 2010.
