BANGALORE: US based Magma Design Automation, a company working in the EDA space, has announced its full-fledged arrival in India with the setting up of an Indian center. The center will be involved in R&D activities along with support and sales and marketing activities.

The company, which specializes in the IC implementation sphere, has been working in India for almost a year now and expects to increase its strength to reach 100 people by 2005. "We will be slightly shy of 40 by the end of this year. By 2004, we should be a little more than 60 and 2005 should see us almost 100 people strong. This number, though small for other sectors, is quite big for the EDA area of operations. Moreover, this strength in Bangalore at this stage could constitute upto 17 percent of Magma worldwide," said Magma Design Automation, India MD Anand Anandkumar.

The company said that it would be allocating Rs 30 crore in investment over the next two to three years. Magma India, which will comprise of four clusters - R&D, Product Engineering, Application Engineering and local sales and marketing, will be working on critical aspects of the company’s technology.

"We will also be involved in building industry and academic associations. We will also work in close collaborations with universities for the same," said Anandkumar, adding that the company will soon be revealing more details on this initiative. "The last two years have been one of the worst periods for the semiconductor industry worldwide. Yet Magma has managed to grow. This is because of our products offer higher Turn Around Time (TAT). Every new generation demanding new technologies will bring forth new leaders. Magma will work to be the new leader for the next generation of integrated design systems," said Magma India Customer Support VP Charlie Simon.

The company estimates the EDA market in India at $40 million/annum and said that the worldwide forecast for EDA and manufacturing services stands at $13 billion for 2003. It added that with China and Taiwan already becoming manufacturing hubs for the silicon industry, India stood a very good chance of becoming the preferred design and R&D hub.
