NEW YORK: Lucent Technologies Inc. will on Monday announce a three-year, $5
billion contract to outfit Verizon Wireless with kit designed significantly to
increase the capacity of the nation's largest wireless provider, the Wall
Street Journal reported in its online edition Monday.
With the Verizon contract, Lucent's largest wireless deal to date, Lucent
will now supply 65 per cent of Verizon's network, the paper reported Jim
Brewington, group president of Lucent's Wireless Networks Group, as saying.
The equipment, designed around a wireless transmission standard called CDMA
2000, will allow Verizon to double its capacity for voice calls over its
existing wireless networks, the paper said. It will also boost wireless
transmission rates by as much as 10 times the current speed, to 144 kilobits per
second, it added.
