US telecom major Lucent Technologies will enter the Indian Internet market through its
recently constituted Internetworking Services (INS) division by introducing a faster and
cost effective DSL connectivity technology.
INS Country Manager, Hirendra Gupta said that the company
had already bagged contracts from many of the Internet Service Providers (ISP) for its
latest digital subscriber line (DSL) and is negotiating with VSNL, MTNL and other private
players in the segment.
INS was formed last month after the telecom major merged
its Internet operations with the operations of Ascend technologies, after it was bought
for $24 billion. Besides the DSL technology, the INS will market their remote access
servers (RAS) and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches to ISPs and other telecom
companies in the country through the vast Lucent network in the country.
Ascend, now INS has already entered into a partnership with
C-Dot to provide a national backbone for the intelligence network (IN) of the Department
of Telecommunications to supply IN switches and other platforms for the project.
