Low cost Firefox smartphones to hit India in July

BANGALORE, INDIA: Mozilla has tied up with handset makers, Intex and Spice to bring ultra-low-cost smartphones to India. The smartphones will hit the market in the next two months.

Priced aggressively, these Firefox OS smartphones will be an attractive proposition for the first time users in emerging markets such as India.

During the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona this year, Mozilla announced its partnership with the low-cost chipset vendor, Spreadtrum and showcased a series of new phones that run on its Firefox mobile operating system, including one prototype costing just $25.

Firefox OS is an extension of the Firefox desktop and mobile browsing experience. The OS is intuitively designed with everything that users expect on a smartphone. Besides bringing a superior browsing experience to your smartphone, the devices come with Firefox Marketplace, which unleashes the power of HTML5 apps on mobile.

Firefox OS is the first device platform built entirely on open Web standards, with every feature developed as an HTML5 application. It empowers users, developers and industry partners to create customized mobile experiences. Operators can easily and deeply customize the interface and develop localized services to fulfill customer needs.

"Mozilla is dedicated to putting the power of the Web in people's hands, and Firefox OS frees consumers, developers, mobile providers and manufacturers from the limitations and restrictions of proprietary platforms," said Dr. Li Gong, chief operating officer of Mozilla. "With more accessible Firefox OS phones coming to India soon, and the addition of Chunghwa Telecom, Intex and Spice to our team of global partners, it is clear that momentum for Firefox OS is continuing to accelerate."

Spice will unveil its first dual-SIM Firefox smartphones in July, 2014. Dilip Modi, chairman Spice Retail Ltd. said "We have high expectations from this partnership as we continue to constantly push the boundaries, and bring unique and exciting products to our customers. These phones will be aggressively priced to ensure, everyone can enjoy and experience the power of the Spice Firefox OS phone."

Intex will unveil its first Firefox smartphone, Cloud FX in August, 2014. Sanjay Kumar Kalirona, business head of the Mobile vertical at Intex said, "Intex Cloud FX is aimed at fulfilling the idea of - ‘Smartphone for all' which will be priced below Rs 2,000. This smartphones will be equipped with enhanced phone and browser features of Firefox OS with an access to a rich ecosystem of latest web applications improving users overall smartphone experience at affordable prices."
