LG launches GSM handsets

PUNE: LG Electronics India launched two new GSM handsets - G3100 and G7100 at the Pune Expo 04. The company also launched new projection televisions in the 44", 54" and 62" screen sizes.

Speaking to media persons here, LGEIL MD KR Kim said that the launch of these products not only widens the product portfolio of the company but is also a step towards its leadership position in the market.

G1700, priced at Rs 25,990, is a camera phone with 270-degree spin screen and a slide mounted VGA camera. The model includes an inbuilt flash with 65000-colour display, MMS, Java and polyphonic ring tones.

Kim said that the company aims to the best in the `color phone segment', which will be the key focus area in 2004. G3100 is priced at Rs 7990 and has features like color display, GPRS, Polyphonic tones and metallic cosmetic design.

According to Kim, the company has a 10 percent share in the GSM market and 40 percent in the CDMA market. LG has five models in the GSM category and eight models in the CDMA category. Another five GSM models will be launched by March this year. The company is expected to launch a range of laptops next month.

The projection televisions come along with five new USPs - digital reality picture clarity (DRPC), Enhanced Digital Convergence, User Control Scan, Velocity Modulation EZ-AV and Variable Audio Output. Among these DPRC is a patented technology. The 44", 54" and 62" size televisions are priced at Rs 99,000, Rs 1.20 lakh and Rs 1.54 lakh respectively. The 62" TV has high resolution.

Kim informed that the company would focus on the hi-end segment in 2004 and target to achieve 27 per cent growth over 2003 in the consumer electronics division.

The company's plant at Ranjangaon is expected to begin operations by August this year with the production of refrigerators and televisions. The Design Center, slated to begin operations from March will focus on designing software for mobile phones, refrigerators and TVs. The 10-member team will go up to 50 by the end of the year.
