In 2008, many IT professionals lost jobs because they were ill-prepared to deal with it and didn't know how to conduct themselves in such times.

Why are we talking about recession now? It may be irrelevant, but we felt there is a great deal in being prepared for the worst.   Here is how you can save your job and keep your career moving.

1. SHOW YOUR WORTH

You may have been hired as a software developer, but over the years you might have learnt some cost-cutting techniques. This means you have more to offer the company. Proving your worth in challenging times should be a priority. Prove that you are good at cost cutting as well as generating ideas.

2. BE UPDATED ABOUT NEW TRENDS

With the IT industry evolving constantly, there is a need for professionals who are adept in the latest technology. If you are in the company for six years doing the same job while there are many improved technology in the market, you may not be effective in your role. The best way is to take up short university courses, read books on that particular topic and upgrade your qualification.

3. MAKE YOUR PRESENCE FELT

If you are the kind who doesn't believe in being aggressive to get the work done, you need to change yourself. It doesn't necessarily mean shouting, but there is a need to show your boss what you are doing. In 2008, many good workers were laid off because they failed to communicate to their bosses what they were capable of apart from the work assigned to them. Improve your communication skills and let your boss know about your new ideas.

4. NEVER SAY NEVER

Learn new tasks. Never shun an opportunity to work more or rather fill up for someone's absence. It's always better to be ready for multi roles. Though software engineers may not agree with it as they are expected to be experts in one field, one needs to have that curiosity to master new skills. Work on the skill that is not your strength and let it help you fill in for another's role, when needed. Even if you are asked to spend some extra hours in the office, remember that might go a long way in saving your job.

5. BE PROACTIVE AND TEAM PLAYER

Leave aside all hatredness and get along with everyone. Flexibility and cooperation with colleagues in their work shows that you are pro-active. If you are an excellent worker, but not in good terms with others, then it may not get you any positive response. When downsizing begins, the boss wants the smallest and efficient team that is easy to handle.

6. BE PREPARED FOR LAYOFF

In the world where change is the only constant thing, one sometimes can't help losing a job. When that time arrives, instead of being helpless, you need to explore jobs that minutely suit your ability and experience. Work on your resume, keep it updated to date. Stay in touch with former co-workers, expand your social networks, especially on LinkedIn, for better professional prospects.
