Kyocera to own Sony’s TFT LCD arm

LONDON, UK: Sony Mobile Display Corp’s thin-film transistor liquid crystal design manufacturing business will be taken over by Kyocera for an undisclosed amount.

Starting June 1, 2010, Sony Mobile Display Corp’s plants in Japan’s Yasu City will be owned and operated by the Kyoto,Japan-based Kyocera Corp. Existing employee contracts and employees will also be shifted to Kyocera on the same date.

Kyocera is already a developer of LCDs for industrial applications which are smaller than 10. 4 inches diagonally.

The company also supplies twisted nematic passive and active displays. The acquisition of Sony’s TFT LCD business will expand Kyocera’s own LCD line and also expand its customer outreach.

The company will be able to better the value of its own products and respond to the increasing demand from customers.
