NEW DELHI: Life cycle solution provider KLG Systel and Primavera, an independent provider of collaborative project, resource and portfolio management solutions, are launching an academy in India called 'Upgrade' to train project managers.
KLG is planning to start three academies right now in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai. The academy in Delhi is supposed to start on March 20.
KLG Systel has already imparted training to 2,000 engineers till date in L&T, EPC and Indian Railways and is leveraging this experience in churning out trained project managers.
Mukesh Arora, CEO, KLG Systel, said, “We have already trained corporate and are now trying to teach it like a subject. We will not only provide project management training but also training on tools, technologies and practices.”
The academy will offer verticalized courses (special courses for managers or engineers in various sectors). The project management certificate is jointly given by Primavera and KLG. It will also carry the logo of Project Management Institute (PMI).
Arora said that these courses will give students credit so that they get pre-qualified for appearing online for the PMP exams.
He further clarified, “We are not giving PMI exam clearance but taking the person to the point where he is ready to take the exam online and we facilitate him taking the exam.”
The courses are of different durations and the credits are given on per hour basis. The academies would also provide CAD courses in collaboration with Autodesk and have got the status of Autodesk authorized training center.
Throwing light on the scope of project management training in India, Arora said, “Unlike in the past when the size of the projects used to be very average, today these are large projects and the stake is also very high, accountability is also very high- so the projects need to be completed on budget and within the time specified. Specific skills are needed to run these projects but there are not enough people to run these projects.”
He added, “Project management goes beyond getting an engineering degree. It also entails understanding of finance, scheduling the activities, etc. To address the requirement of skilled project managers for infrastructure project, focus on areas like how to use project management, CAD, how to simulate risk, plan risk, manage finance, etc. is also needed.”
KLG plans to differentiate itself from others on the basis of its alliance with the industry. Arora said, “We have over 1,000 customers in project management in India and have been in this industry since the last 14 years. So the amount of domain knowledge we have acquired is huge and we can quote example that a normal teacher cannot. Our biggest differentiator is our proximity to the industry which helps us train better.”
