Kerala Police to establish 'Cyber Security Centre'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, INDIA: The Police Department in Kerala will establish a cyber security centre to monitor the Internet for unlawful activities and support the law enforcement agencies to deal with cyber criminals.

The cyber security centre, named "Kerala Police Cyberdome" will be set up at the Technopark in Thiruvanathapuram. The centre will focus on delivering advanced cyber security solutions and innovations.

The Cyberdome, which will come up in a 5,000-sq.ft secure facility at the IT hub, will act as an online police patrol.

The centre will also function as an innovation unit where new software and solutions to policing issues will be tested. The cyber security officers will work towards generating intelligence on various cyber threats occurring quite frequently. The officers will also track fugitives' presence online and monitor their activities in social media and online domain.

Online payments will also be tracked, which means money laundering and channelling of funds to dubious organisations will be under check. A digital repository of stolen and lost vehicles and travel documents will also be created. Due to growing digitisation in Kerala, cyber crimes have been one of the main concerns in the state.

According to a report on the Hindu, "The State has an estimated 2.5-crore mobile phone connections, 12-lakh Internet subscribers and 30-lakh landlines. Its television density is 85 per cent, compared with the national average of 56.8."

The Kerala Police has urged various IT companies to provide latest technology free of cost or at nominal rates and experts for specific tasks to support the law enforcement agencies of the state.

The project will be implemented under the guidance of Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, State Police Chief K.S. Balasubramanian and Inspector-General of Police Manoj Abraham.
