THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health care sector in Kerala can now reap the benefits of information technology by streamlining the activities of the government medical institutions and provide better service to the citizens.

Addressing a Meet the Minister program organized at the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club to mark the second anniversary of the Congress-led UDF government, Kerala Health Minister P Sankaran said that medical colleges in the state would soon be linked with the Directorate of Medical Education, which in turn would be networked with the Department of Health and Family Welfare.

According to the minister, the state government is also planning computerization of district hospitals and connecting them to the Directorate of Health Services and Health and Family Welfare Department. "E-governance will be introduced in the health department by the end of this financial year," he said adding that all the district ayurveda and homeo hospitals would also be computerized and networked with their directorate that would be further linked to the Health and Family Welfare Department.

The minister also informed that the Union Government had approved a tele-medicine project for the state. The project is estimated to cost Rs 2.5 crore and New Delhi had agreed to contribute Rs 2 crore for the same.

This is reportedly the first state project of its kind to be funded by the Union Government. Under the project, four remote telemedicine referral centers (RTRCs) would be started at Kollam, Malapuram, Koilandy and Neyyatinkara taluks. These will be linked with the Thiruvanananthapuram Medical College, Regional Cancer Centers and Sree Chitra Institute of Medical Sciences.

The state government would soon be hosting the draft on standardization of medical institutions inviting stakeholder’s response.
