KDDI refreshes old Enterprise DW platform

INDIA: Japan's second largest telecommunications company, KDDI has put into operation a Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) platform from Teradata Corporation, a player in data warehousing and enterprise analytics.

The Active EDW replaces another vendor's platform that has experienced performance deterioration as the number of users, data volume and query complexity has increased. Testing of the Teradata Active EDW platform demonstrated a seven-time increase in the average performance than the current data warehouse system, without requiring tuning. The Teradata installation enables KDDI to integrate the data on customers and usage, and other critical information gathered from a wide range of KDDI service operations, and to analyze that information to further improve customer service.

The Teradata Active EDW installation is expected to improve the efficiency of disk usage as compared to the current platform, enabling the company to cut back its disk and other hardware investments, according to KDDI company officials. Also, the company expects to substantially reduce system operating costs by eliminating the complex system tuning required for the previous platform.

This first phase of the Teradata installation begins KDDI's migration to a new data retrieval and analysis platform running exclusively on a Teradata platform.

A press release adds that Active EDW will serve as the data retrieval and analysis platform that KDDI uses to perform multi-faceted analyses of customer, rate and other related data from its mission-critical sales support and planning system.

"Using the Teradata Active EDW platform for extensive analysis of its business operations will help KDDI find ways to improve its customer service. These improvements, and the lower cost of operating a Teradata system compared to its previous data warehouse platform, mean KDDI will quickly begin realizing a return on this investment," said David Grant, Vice president of global industry solutions, Teradata Corporation.

This first phase of the Teradata installation begins KDDI's migration to a new data retrieval and analysis platform running exclusively on a Teradata platform. Future phases will involve migration of additional corporate data for a full enterprise-wide system running on Teradata.
