BANGALORE: The much-touted Electronic Hardware Technology Park (EHTP) here,
which has been waiting to see the light of day, will become a reality in a year
or two.
Sources in the State government have confirmed that real estate firm Shapoorji
Pallonji has been selected to develop the 1400-acre park that is coming up at
Devanahalli near the upcoming international airport in Bangalore.
The investment into the joint-venture project — between the real estate firm
and the government -- is stated to be north of Rs 8000 crore. The State
government's high-level committee has cleared the project and the formal
signing of the deal is expected soon.
Shankarlinge Gowda, IT and BT secretary, Government of Karnataka, said that the
hardware park has been delayed, as companies wanted the airport to be ready.
“Logistics is a very important part of the hardware ecosystem. The park will
definitely be ready before the international airport is ready in 2008,” he
said.
The move is expected to boost the State's hardware industry. STPI reported a
40 per cent increase in Karnataka's hardware exports in 2005-`06. The State
recorded exports of Rs 2481 crore compared with last year's Rs 1768 crore.
BV Naidu, director, STPI-Bangalore expects the hardware growth to be over 35 per
cent next year. Some of the top hardware companies in Karnataka include APC,
Tyco Electronics, TVS Electronics, Flextronics and Elcoteq.
The State's IT rival Andhra Pradesh has also allocated 5000 acres of land for
a hardware park.
