According to the Department of Mines and Geology, the main objective of the project is to delineate the mineral belts on various potential zones in the state by adopting remote sensing techniques marking the free hold areas for the benefit of all stakeholders involved, says a report in FutureGov Asia.

With the help of GIS based geo database system, local authorities can map mineralised zones, develop mineral atlas and access data on existing leases. The data can be accessed from the department's website and it can be used by the industry stakeholders to file online applications for mining lease.

As per a Government of India's mandate, the department will establish an online Mining Tenement Registry on a pilot basis in Bellary district. The project will digitise all village maps in the scale of 1:4,000 which will be extended to Gulbarga district.

With the use of GIS technology, the data on mining lease application and lease will be incorporated on cadastral maps. A data centre and server will be established in Bangalore.
