BANGALORE: The Chennai-based K7 Computing Private Ltd. has discovered a new virus called "Fix2001," which comes as a 12-Kb "Fix2001.Exe'' file attached to an email message, with the subject "Internet Problem year 2000'', with the body text both in English and Spanish.

If the infected file is executed, the virus copies itself to the Windows system folder, and makes changes to the system so that it runs automatically next time the system is rebooted, according to a statement by K7 Computing.

It then replays the message, "Your Internet connection is already Y2K, you don't need to upgrade it''. After rebooting the computer, whenever Internet connection is established, all outgoing mail will be followed by another message with this virus as an attachment. The e-mail appears to be from the "administrator'' of the user's ISP.

According to K7 Computing, the virus e-mail, which has already started spreading in India, looks genuine, and all the users are prone to get infected. The virus also has remote chances of erasing all the data from your hard disk if critical portions of the virus code have been tampered with. K7 Computing has placed a free utility to detect and cure this virus at its Web site www.k7computing.com.
