Just-Eat bets big on Indian market

MUMBAI, INDIA: After acquiring a majority stake in Bangalore’s online food ordering website Hungryzone.com last year, the Denmark-based Just-Eat Group’s online food ordering and table booking platform Just-Eat.com rolled out its Mumbai operations here on Tuesday.

With 60 per cent stake in Hungryzone, Just-Eat Group re-branded the Bangalore-based portal as JustEat.in and strengthened its India operations. It committed investments of US$ 5-10 million in the coming three years, recruit more staffs and increase the local presence in major cities through this joint venture.

“We provide technology solution that allows consumers to order foods from local restaurants through Internet. The local restaurants can benefits by listing their food menu on Just-East’s website, the consumers can search restaurants in local areas, place their orders which gets processed through us and the order is delivered on time,” said David Buttress, Just-Eat.com’s managing director.

“The acquisition of a controlling interest in Just-Eat.in marked the first step of Just-Eat’s expansion into Asia and we are very excited to work with such an innovative team in different markets of India as the company has a deep understanding of the food preferences of each market,” he commented.

Bangalore-based Hungryzone.com, founded by Ritesh Dwivedy in 2006, is claimed to be India’s largest online food ordering and table booking platform with 650 restaurants on its list, 100,000 registered users placing 10,000 home delivery orders and 16,000 table covers. The firm generated US$1 million revenue last year.

After launching Hungryzone’s new brand as JustEat.in, the portal will soon start its operations in Delhi in the coming few weeks. The portal would increase staff strength to 50 from the existing 25 and also will expand to 12 more cities by end of 2012.

The website will help people in finding wide variety of quality restaurants, placing an order and sharing experiences on the same can now be done on a single robust platform in a matter of few clicks. Since 2000, Just-Eat.com has developed a proprietary technology to offer a seamless online ordering service.

The Just-Eat Group operates in the UK, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Netherlands, Ireland, Norway, Canada and India.
