New Update
NTA reopens registration and modification for JEE Main April/May sessions to be conducted from July 20 to August 2

Ideally, for the January JEE Main exams, the applications begin as early as September. But, due to the pandemic, the JEE Main April 2020 exams got pushed to September as well. So, the dates are unlikely to come out anytime soon. Moreover, the academic session for 2020-21 has not even begun this year. The engineering entrance exam happens twice every year, in January and April. If the timeline was correct, JEE Main 2021 would be, first conducted on January 31, and then in April.

But it is not. Last year, NTA announced JEE Main 2020 exam dates in August and started the registration process for JEE Main January exam on September 2. The January session of the entrance test was held as per schedule but the COVID-19 pandemic, and the subsequent nationwide lockdown enforced in March, delayed the conduct of JEE Main April 2020 exam. NTA finally conducted the April exams in September and announced results within a record five days.

When will JEE Main 2021 happen?

Students prepping for IIT, are possibly in 12th, or the gap year. They are awaiting the dates to decide their career timeline. So, to streamline the process, NTA will soon announce the JEE Main 2021 dates. The official notification, mentioning the JEE Mains 2021 complete syllabus, exam pattern, registration process, and other information, will come out on the official website.

Eligibility for JEE Main 2021

While there is no upper age limit for appearing in JEE Main 2021, candidates can appear only for three consecutive years. This year, the chances are that NTA might relax a year due to the pandemic. Further, students who have passed class 12th or equivalent in 2019, 2020 or appearing in 2021 irrespective of their age can appear in JEE Main 2021. If you sit for both January and April sessions, both of these will be counted as a single attempt.

Moreover, candidates must have passed the qualifying examination with 50% marks in Mathematics and 50% in aggregate of the QE to sit for BPlan Paper. For BE or BTech, applicants must have passed the qualifying examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the Chemistry/Biotechnology/ Biology/ Technical Vocational Subject. For BArch, candidates must have passed the Qualifying Examination with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Candidates who passed class XII or QE in 2018 or before as well as those who will appear in such examination in 2022 or later are not eligible to appear in JEE Main 2021. (This may change due to the pandemic, though.)

The debate on the delay of JEE Main 2021

Institutes have been debating whether or not JEE Main 2021 gets pushed to February or March. But, as per NTA Director-General Vineet Joshi, they are planning to hold the January session for JEE Main 2021 on time. Planning another exam right after September may take time. IIT Delhi Director Prof Ramgopal Rao confirmed the same, while he added that NTA can delay the exam by a month. Not just conduction of JEE Main 2021, 10th-12th board exams is at stake as well. If board examinations don't happen in March, or schools don’t open in time, then it impacts JEE Main 2021 exams directly.
