Ittiam eyes larger chunk of DSP IP market

BANGALORE: Ittiam Systems that focuses on digital signal processing (DSP) applications for the digital media processing space, is looking for a larger chunk of the addressable market for DSP IP, which is currently estimated at $1-2 billion.

The company currently provides IP software and reference designs for video telephony, wireless LAN and media players.

Srini Rajam, the company’s co-founder and CEO, said that there was still a lot of scope to grow in this market. “The challenge is to achieve 3-4 times the current scale of business. Currently, we are doing around two million units a year and we want to reach 10-20 million units in 3-4 years.”

To do this, the company is also hoping that its core competencies in video processing, audio/speech processing, wireless communication and system design would expand to market segments beyond its current focus such as HD-TV, set-top boxes, DVD players, mobile TV, IP TV, surveillance, multimedia entertainment, digital camcorders and IP set-top boxes. “There is no dearth of opportunity and we are even open for partnerships and mergers with companies that offer capabilities in the new products,” said Rajam.

Since the company is privately held, its current revenues are not known. The previous known figures stood at $4.8 million in 2004. Once the company touches the scale that it is aiming at, it would look at going for an IPO, informed Rajam.

Bangalore-based Ittiam Systems now has over 100 customers worldwide, 31 patent filings and 200 employees in India, UK, Taiwan and the United States.

The company recently announced the availability of high definition video decoder engine - MFVDEC (Multi-Format High Definition Video Decoder) IP - that forms the core of HD-DVD and Set-Top box ASIC solutions.
