BANGALORE, August 27 : ITI, the public sector telecom
hardware company, opened a Regional Repair Centre (RRC) here to supplement
the countrywide network of its customer care organizations. A similar
centre is also to be set up in Lucknow soon. The RRCs will extend
maintenance and repair services to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)
and other customers.
Inaugurating the RRC at the ITI premises in
Doorvaninagar here, Telecom Commission Member (Production) R.N. Goyal,
stressed the importance of research and development to bring out new
products and keep pace with competition in the field. He suggested an RRC
in Mumbai to meet the needs of customers in Maharashtra and parts of
Madhya Pradesh.
The Bangalore centre will cater to the
requirements of southern states and Gujarat, covering a customer base of
1.5 million lines of E 10B exchanges. The centre, with sophisticated
repair facilities and trained manpower, could be further upgraded to
extend services to new technology switches. The RRCs will mobilize a
revenue of Rs 35 crore during the current fiscal. ITI hopes to increase it
further to Rs 50 crore by the year 2000-2001.
