According to Sayan Chatterjee, director general of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), it is important for the government, business experts and consumers to come together to explore how standards can contribute to the safety and security concerns of consumers.

“The development and use of open, interoperable and demand-driven standards that take into account the needs of users and consumers, and also affordable access to such standards has become a basis element in the development of information technology,” he said at a function organized by the Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology.

He added that the standardization of IT acts is a key factor for economic and industrial development of the country and it has become one of the essential building blocks of Information society.

“All of us need to put in serious efforts towards IT standardization for sustaining the growth momentum in this field,” he invited special interest groups to come forward and join the efforts.

“In the absence of standards there would be no such thing as interoperability and meaningful exchange of information between different systems would be next to impossible,” Chatterjee added, pointing out that standards support legislation, promote trade, create common understanding, reduce costs, accelerate product development, and even save lives.

Standards play crucial role in achieving compatibility and interoperability,” he further said.

Adoption of emerging IT trends and technology standards has now become an important means for countries and companies to remain competitive and attain economic viability and also to keep pace with the changing demands of a global economy.

The government has recently initiated a framework in the country for ensuring compliance of electronics and IT goods to standards of safety and electromagnetic compatibility, which is likely to facilitate making Indian hardware industries globally competitive.

The BIS had already published Indian Standards on safety and EMC compatibility of IT goods.
