This sounds spooky, but a Bengaluru-based programmer has found that Airtel is compromising the privacy of its 3G users by inserting codes to study their browsing patterns. And all for ads!!

In a recent Tweet, the programmer who goes by the name of Thejesh GN (@thej) claimed that Airtel 3G is injecting Javascript into your browsing session over its 3G network.

Thejesh alleged that Airtel has partnered with Ericsson for the data tracker solution. He made the codes or the solution public on code-repository website called GitHub. Soon after that he received a cease and desist legal notice from Flash Networks for making a proprietary code public. So, Airtel’s solution is actually made by Flash Networks and Ericsson simply offered this service to Airtel, Thejesh informed through his Tweet.

According to a report in Indian Express, Flash Networks on its website boasts that it offers telecom operators solution to help mobile operators communicate with their subscribers as they browse the Web, and to offer them services that generate new downstream revenues from over-the-top affiliation.

While Airtel has refused the allegations of spying into customer data, it has asserted the existence of the code which it claimed “is deployed to help customers keep track of data consumption and ultimately better customer experience.”
