LONDON, UK: Denmark-based IPtronics has come up with a new innovative 10-Gbits optical interconnect system, silicon for Light Peak. The innovation has been made effective through a collaborative effort with Intel and other industry partners.

IPtronics supplies the driver and receiver silicon that goes into the optical conversion module and has its silicon manufactured by STMicroelectronics.

According to an EETimes Europe report, Intel has endorsed this new project saying that it was pleased to be working with IPtronics to make Light Peak optical components ready to ship in 2010.

Meanwhile, the report also added that San Jose-based Avago Technologies Inc has also developed an embedded optical engine for Light Peak.

Jason Ziller, director of the optical I/O program at Intel, said Light Peak has high bandwidth and the ability to run multiple I/O protocols over a single cable, enabling the technology to connect to many devices such as displays, disk drives, peripherals, and docking stations, the report added.

IPTronics, in the meanwhile, elaborated on its innovation saying that the announcement of Light Peak technology by Intel and supporting statements by Sony clearly reveal that optical interconnect has ceased to be a niche technology for high-end servers and super computers, where it is already used.
