BANGALORE, INDIA: People in India who are eagerly waiting for the Apple iPhone 5, may be able own the handset soon. Apple Inc. is apparently changing the way it has been selling iPhones in India so far.

According to a report on Wall Street Journal, ''Apple will begin selling the iPhone through specialized distribution companies in an attempt to reach a wider audience, especially Indians who live in thousands of smaller towns,'' said a source familiar with the matter.

Apple has apparently approached Ingram Micro Inc. and Redington (India) Ltd. to sell iPhone 5 in India. Apple has used both these distributors in the past for products like the iPad.

Apple, however, has declined to comment on this issue. Rumors suggest that iPhone 5 mights cost Rs. 48,000 in India and the speculated launch date is October 26.

The new report echoes the views of an earlier report on BGR India which said, ''Apple is preparing to launch the iPhone 5 in India on the last Friday of this month, which happens to be October 26. They had also reported that ''Apple will be distributing the iPhone 5 in India on its own rather than relying on its carrier partners''.

''We expect the iPhone 5 to have a wider availability unlike the past where it was not available readily everywhere,'' added the report.

Apple has also apparently slashed the prices of iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S by Rs. 2000. iPhone 4 (8 GB) costs Rs. 28,300 and is expected to be available on new rate of Rs. 26,500, whereas the present cost of a 16GB iPhone 4S is Rs. 41,500 which now is expected on a new price of Rs. 38,500.
