IP traffic to grow 4-fold by 2019, forecasts Cisco

BANGALORE, INDIA: Annual Internet Protocol (IP) traffic will quadruple between 2014 and 2019, according to the 10th annual Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Forecast.

Factors expected to drive traffic growth include increase in consumption of mobile data, proliferation in number of networked devices (from 1.1 billion in 2014 to 1.6 billion in 2019), faster broadband speeds (average fixed broadband speed to increase from 4 Mbps in 2014 to 12 Mbps by 2019) and the increased consumption of video.

Collectively, these variables are expected to help IP traffic in India to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33 percent – as against a corresponding global CAGR of 23 percent.

· Internet traffic in 2019 will be equivalent to 180x the volume of the entire Indian Internet in 2005.

·IP traffic will grow 4-fold from 2014 to 2019, a compound annual growth of 33%

o Busy hour Internet traffic will grow 5.6 fold from 2014 to 2019, a compound annual growth rate of 41%. In India, mobile data traffic will grow 13-fold from 2014 to 2019, a compound annual growth of 67%.

· IP video traffic will grow 6-fold from 2014 to 2019, a compound annual growth of 43%.

o IP video will be 80% of all IP traffic in 2019, up from 56% in 2014

o Consumer IP video traffic will be 82% of consumer IP traffic in 2019, up from 63% in 2014

o Business IP video traffic will be 65% of business IP traffic in 2019, up from 29% in 2014

· Internet video traffic will grow 7-fold from 2014 to 2019, a compound annual growth of 47%.

o Total Internet video traffic (business and consumer, combined) will be 74% of all Internet traffic in 2019, up from 46% in 2014.

o Consumer Internet video traffic will be 76% of consumer Internet traffic in 2019, up from 50% in 2014

o Business Internet video traffic will be 65% of business Internet traffic in 2019, up from 30% in 2014

·  There will be 1.6 billion networked devices in 2019, up from1.1 billion in 2014

oPCs will account for 3% (44.6 million) of all networked devices in 2019, compared to 4% (44.8 million) in 2014, (-0.1% CAGR).

o Tablets will account for 2% (30.4 million) of all networked devices in 2019, compared to 1% (12.9 million) in 2014, (18.7% CAGR).

o Smartphones will account for 40% (651.4 million) of all networked devices in 2019, compared to 13% (139.8 million) in 2014, (36% CAGR).

o Connected TVs will account for 11% (182.0 million) of all networked devices in 2019, compared to 6% (64.2 million) in 2014, (23.2% CAGR).

o 74% of all networked devices will be mobile-connected in 2019

· The average fixed broadband speed will grow 2.9-fold from 2014 to 2019, from 4.0 Mbps to 12 Mbps.

· The average Internet user will generate 14.6 gigabytes of Internet traffic per month in 2019, up 187% from 5.1 gigabytes per month in 2014, a CAGR of 23%.

o The average Internet household will generate 40.9 gigabytes of Internet traffic per month in 2019, up 236% from 12.1 gigabytes per month in 2014, a CAGR of 27%.
