MAJORDA BEACH (Goa): Commenting on the challenges created by the evolving information security landscape, AS Shivaprakash of Novell, today said investments in multiple solutions have led to lesser RoI.
Addressing a session on Leveraging Information Overload for Effective Security Management at the CIOL C-Change 2007 here, Shivaprakash said security management is now viewed differently.
Elucidating further on today’s security landscape, he said people are now open to allow others into their own networks. This has become a norm, as a business need, which was not the case three years ago.
“When you have so many devices, applications, subsystems, etc., in place within networks, the information that we get to see does not allow us to see any business points. There was a need to view data that was relevant from the business perspective.”
He said Novell offers solutions to address these needs. Its comprehensive framework facilitates a holistic view of a company’s security devices and the environment.
Shivaprakash said business imperatives of organizations take security management decisions. People are more likely to invest if there is a potential business case. Hence, security is business challenges-centric.
He also spelt out the five steps involved in security and event management: Transport and aggregate; reduce and normalize; correlate; report; and archive.
After aggregation, in normalization phase, all data collected is transferred to a correlation engine. A reporting engine picks up the correlated data before it is archived.
Novell offers security and identity solutions, data center solutions, resource management, workgroup solutions and desktop solutions.
