BANGALORE: Dell today announced that the latest versions of the Intel Pentium
M processor will now reside in Dell's corporate and consumer wireless-ready
notebooks. Available immediately, both the Latitude D800, Dell Precision M60
mobile workstation and the Inspiron 8600 can be configured with the fastest
version of the new processors, the Intel Pentium M processor 755, featuring
2.0GHz processor speed, 2MB Level 2 cache and 400MHz front side bus. A broad
range of other Dell notebooks can be configured with a variety of the new
processors, including the Intel Pentium M processor 745, Intel Pentium M
processor 735 and the Intel Celeron M processor 330.
With the new processors, Intel is introducing a 3-digit processor numbering
sequence announced in April this year. Processor numbers categorized in
sequences are a way to make it easier for consumers to differentiate processors
within each of Intel's processor families. A higher number indicates more
processor features, more of a specific processor feature, or changes in
architecture.
"Businesses and individual consumers are choosing notebooks over desktop
computer systems with increasing frequency. Notebooks allow users the
flexibility to work outside traditional office environments on self-determined
schedules, and can actually extend the typical work week by a couple of
hours," said Leslie Fiering, lead mobile analyst, Gartner.
"Increased versatility and the potential productivity gains benefit both
employees and their employers," he added. According to a study 'The
Positive Payback of Notebooks over Desktops' by Gartner, while notebooks can
cost more to purchase and maintain than desktops, the premium quickly becomes an
investment if the notebook enables the customer to extend their work week by as
little as two hours.
