Intel makes another big bang with atom

BANGALORE,INDIA: Taking into account the Internet revolution in India, Intel, a leading provider of silicon innovation, announced on Tuesday announced the availability of Intel atom processor on its embedded roadmap.

The atom processor is expected to power a host of reference designs namely handheld appliance reference design and embedded security design.

The handheld appliance reference design is basically targeted at portable appliances for areas including sales force automation, financial inclusion, inventory management and general point applications in restaurants and airports.

And the embedded security design is meant for customers developing an automated security surveillance system used in SMB settings.

The embedded roadmap is inclusive of Intel atom Z5xx family of processors, atom processor N 270 with the mobile Intel 945 GSE express chip.

R.Ravichandran, director, sales, Intel South Asia said, “There is a tremendous opportunity for these smart solutions in the market today as the number of internet connected devices reaches into billions, performance expectations rise and devices shrink.These products enable our customers to develop their own innovation and system design around the many benefits of Intel architecture.”

The Intel atom family of products is optimized for the low power needs of embedded markets such as digital signage, interactive clients, digital security, residential gateways, print imaging, industrial control etc.

It is expected to provide a seven year extended life cycle and is found to be ideal for applications such as traditional embedded and industrial computer systems, small to medium sized business, enterprise security applications, IPtelephony, and WIMAX infrastructure.

Procsys and Inforce Computing are said to be the major customers of Intel atom processor for embedded application.

“With the Intel atom processor and the launch of our India design house program last year, we are enabling Indian design house to play an increasingly active role in platform definition and design for customers worldwide,” said, Sanat Rao, marketing director, embedded and communications group, Intel South Asia.

Intel said it plans to launch three to four referral designs a year.
