SAN FRANCISCO: Intel has announced the introduction of Hyperthreading
technology in its Xeon processors for servers. This is part of the several
products that the company has announced at the Intel Developer Forum being held
here.
Hyperthreading technology increases the performance of two-way processors by
as much as 30 per cent. Intel said that the first Xeon processors with
Hyperthreading technology would have speeds of 2.2, 2 and 1.8GHz. It allows an
operating system to view one processor as two, thus increasing the multitasking
capabilities and server response time. This allows increased support to users.
Hyperthreading will become a standard in all the future Xeon processors. Vendors
such as Compaq, HP, Dell and IBM are expected to release products based on the
latest Xeon chips.
The company has also introduced its Netburst microarchitecture and the new
E7500 chipset for the Xeon-based server platform.
The company has also released a Gigabit Ethernet controller optimized for
desktop PCs that is 45 per cent smaller than the previous controller. This helps
manufacturers reduce the cost of deploying Gigabit Ethernet network connections
in those systems by up to 50 per cent.
