NEW DELHI: "Innovation in IT is building new paradigms for the people in India," stated PRAJA chairman Prof. CK Prahlad. He was speaking at TiEcon India 2004. He added, "IT Innovation for progress in rural areas is evident from examples like Narayana Hindualaya, a project undertaken in rural areas which includes digital connections with tertiary hospital and video conferencing. It also connects farmers to the global markets".

According to Prahlad, innovation in building new business models is creating capacity to consume. "We are using technology to bridge the divide, which is evident from one of the projects undertaken in rural areas ITC-E Choupal for Soya. The outcome of this project was one PC per village and connecting all rural villages. One-lakh farmers are gaining from this project," he added.

Another good innovation Prahlad talked about was e-governance. ICICI bank was opened in rural areas to educate the villages how to use ATMs and now sixty-seven percent of the people are using ATMs. Prahlad expects this number to touch 100 percent in two years.

He added that private sector will work with rural areas to bring desired results and all multinationals have to look at the bottom of the pyramid and bring the latest technology to rural areas.

TiEcon India 2004, which was held in New Delhi, focused on the key theme - "Entrepreneurship in a Global Age: The Engine of Growth".

TiEcon India 2004, the annual event of the New Delhi Chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs , a global not-for-profit organization, is Asia's largest conventions focused on entrepreneurship.
