BANGALORE, INDIA: In a ghastly incident in India's silicon hub late Saturday, Infosys Technologies' software engineer Amit Budhiraj (30) killed his wife Rinku Sachdev (28) and later committed suicide by hanging, the police said here today.
A police officer investigating the crime said in a suicide note found in the two-bed room house, Budhiraj had confessed to have strangled Sachdev to death for "having an affair with her colleague" and was ending his life.
"Amit doubted that his wife was having an affair with her colleague. He also heard her talking to the colleague on mobile a number of times on Saturday, which was a festival day – Holi. Following a heated argument and a scuffle between the couple, Rinku was suffocated to death using a pillow by Amit," inspector G Nagaraj of Koramangala police station said.
Police declined to give the colleague's name as investigations were in progress. Sachdev, a charted accountant, was employed with multinational bank Stanchart as an executive in the city.
Police have registered a case of "clear-cut murder" against Budhiraj under section 302 of IPC (Indian Penal Code) and a case of unnatural death against Sachdev under section 174 of Cr PC (criminal procedure code).
Bodies of the couple were shifted to St John's hospital in the city for post-mortem.
An Infosys spokesperson declined to comment on the incident involving the company's senior employee saying "it was a personal matter."
Budhiraj, who has been working in India's second largest IT bellwether over the last nine years, married Sachdev two years ago. The couple was staying in a rented house, located in the city's posh suburb of Koramangala.
"After the arranged marriage in Delhi, Rinku, who hails from Mumbai, shifted to Bangalore to live with Amit. Their parents have been informed about the tragic incident. They are reaching here on Monday," Nagaraj said.
The incident came to light today afternoon when Sachdev's friend in the neighbourhood, Urmila, was trying to contact the former on her mobile.
"Rinku and Urmila had planned to see a movie at Inox in downtown today afternoon. When Urmila did not get any response from Rinku's mobile, she went to the latter's house to meet her in person. With the help of a duplicate key from the landlord, Urmila entered the couple's house on ground floor and to her shock found Amit hanging from a ceiling fan and Rinku's body on the cot in their bedroom," Nagaraj recalled.
According to colleagues, Budhiraj was known to be a gentleman and maintained good relations with everyone at Infosys.
