NEW DELHI: German-semiconductor major Infineon Technologies AG would set up a Fab in India.

A formal announcement in this regard was expected later on Wednesday.

Infineon would be the first company to announce plans to set up a Fab, after the Semiconductor policy was officially notified late last week.

According to sources in the ministry of information technology, Dr Wolfgang Ziebart, president and chief executive officer of Infineon, would meet Dayanidhi Maran, the minister for communications and IT, later on Wednesday.

The announcement regarding the Fab was expected after this meeting, sources said.

Infineon was learnt to have tied-up with Hindustan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (HSMC) as technology partner, a company floated by NRI Devendra Verma, managing partner of the California-based investment company, Edgewood..

Sources said HSMC would set-up the fab at a total investment of $4.2 billion.

The Fab would focus on four products: chipsets for mobile phones, direct to home TV set top boxes, automotive and smart cards.

The first line, which would represent an investment of $1 billion, was scheduled to use 90-nm and 130-nm processes and 200-mm wafers.
