NEW DELHI: With India striving towards bridging the 'digital divide', issues related to cyber security cannot be neglected.

Over the past couple of years, India has witnessed a tremendous increase in Internet penetration. However, this has increased the vulnerabilities of networks and the overall Internet infrastructure. Tighter security guidelines and procedures are mandatory to address issues related to Internet security.

"We have seen the growth of Internet infrastructure in this region and now the government is engaged in increasing broadband connectivity in far flung areas. So, we need to focus more towards a tighter security regime," explained deputy director NCSD for US CERT Jerry Dixon. He was speaking at a seminar organized by CERT — In at New Delhi.

"Rapid growth of Internet infrastructure means that we should put more effort towards making sure that cyber security is maintained in every possible way. Everyday, we are witnessing newer technologies like P2P, IM or IRC being put towards spreading malicious activity on the Web. Private organizations with government help should come forward to deal with this situation," informed Symantec Security Response manager and executive editor of the Symantec Internet Security Threat Report, Dean Turner.

The Indo-US seminar on Cyber Security, organized by CERT-In, was well attended by over 150 experts from government organizations as well as private companies in segments like banking, pharma and telecom.
