While app store searches and personal recommendations are the top sources for new app discovery across Asia, in India, suggestions from family and friends is the top reasons for installing an app.

The research also highlighted that for app makers, the best way to reach people more effectively was through automated Universal App Campaigns (UAC). For example, India's Hike Messenger used UAC to rack up install volumes. The result was overwhelming as the company saw 10x times increase in install volume with 30 percent lower costs per install.

The study examined 10,000 smartphone users in ten Asian countries — India, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, and China — in the age group of 18-64 to understand their app behavior.
