India's Grid Index moved from 2.9 to 4.4 (on a scale of 0 to 10), the global average stands at 5.2, whereas the average Grid Index for the Asia Pacific (APAC) region stood at 4.9. Interestingly in spite of the phenomenal increase in the Grid Index, India still has the lowest overall Grid Index in the APAC region.

The Oracle Grid Index maps the global shift towards Grid computing and is measured on three indices; Foundation Readiness, Knowledge & Interest, and Adoption Lifecycle. India was also leading in the APAC region in terms of adoption of Grid computing, scoring 2.6 in the Adoption Lifecycle index, while the APAC region averaged at 2.0.

Speaking on the same, Nick Evered, senior vice president (Technology), Oracle Asia Pacific said, “The research proves that increasing organizations around the globe are taking notice of Grid computing.” He highlighted the fact that there was a significant increase in awareness of Grid computing in India, 48 percent of the organizations polled have either made or are in the process of adopting Grid computing.

According to the report, India leads the APAC region in Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) with almost 50 percent active or planned deployment within the next 12 months. India also leads the APAC region in usage of Blade server technology with almost 40% of organizations with active or planned deployment.

The report also states, “With the relatively low Foundation Readiness Index at 5.3. India needs to focus on putting the necessary IT foundations in place to be in a strong position to make even greater improvement in the future.”

Grid Computing can be defined as coordinated use of many servers and storage acting as one large computer. The Oracle Grid Index report is derived from interviews with 1,466 senior IT influencers and decision makers across Europe, North America and Asia Pacific.

More than 500 of the respondents were from the APAC region. The Grid report is presented bi-annually, and is conducted by an independent research organization from Europe, Quocirca.

The Oracle Grid Index Report was released on the eve of the Oracle Open World Event that is being held in Mumbai from January 10-11.
