HYDERABAD: The India Semiconductor Association (ISA)-Ernst & Young benchmarking study on India in the global Semiconductor Design Ecosystem, released today on the concluding day of the ISA Vision Summit places highly the availability and scalability of the talent in the country. While the quality of talent is moderately placed by the study, the concern is over the quality of technical education.

The report, the first of its kind in the country, compares the semiconductor design scenario in India with that of Canada, China, Czech Republic, Israel, Taiwan, the UK and the USA.

The report also raises concern over the rising salary cost in India. With a need to train the engineering graduates the report also calls for the development of IP regulation in India.

It took four months for ISA-Ernst & Young to come out with the study. The study features two components: survey and benchmarking. The survey was carried out through structured questionnaire. A total of 28 design manufacturers responded to the questionnaire, according to Ernst & Young officials.

“For the first time we have information for corporates to peg their business decisions. The ISA-EYI study has taken industry inputs and used parameters that are of relevance in making these decisions,” said Poornima Shenoy, president ISA.

The Benchmarking study highlights the challenges of the Indian Semiconductor Design industry and suggests the key imperatives to facilitate a sustainable growth of the industry and make India the preferred destination for semiconductor design activity.

The report also addresses the factors influencing business decisions for locating semiconductor design facilities across the globe.

The study was released by the minister of state in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chavan. “The study helps gauge the industry’s strengths, challenges faced by the industry and highlights key imperatives for continued growth in the Semiconductor Design industry. I would like to compliment both Ernst & Young and Indian Semiconductor Association for bringing out this benchmarking study,” he said.
