The research report added that this growth rate was more than five times the worldwide PC market’s growth average in the fourth quarter of 2010.

“This growth was primarily driven by the mobile PC market which grew 39 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2010,” said Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst at Gartner.

“A fall in prices, large deals from governments and demand from consumers and the education sector drove mobile PCs sales. Many small and mid-size businesses are buying mobile PC’s which is further fuelling growth.”

All the major PC vendors experienced high double-digit growth in mobile PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2010. Multinational brands continued to do well with shipments from Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo, the top 4 vendors, representing 49.1 per cent of total shipments in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Local vendor HCL accounted for 7.8 per cent of PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2010. HP regained sales leadership position in 4Q and for all of 2011 closely followed by Dell, the release added.
