India launches 'world's cheapest' laptop

TIRUPATI, INDIA: India' Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh, launched the 'world's cheapest laptop' in a function at the Tirupati temple on Tuesday evening.

The laptop, jointly developed by the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, will be priced at around $10 to $20 (about Rs 500 to Rs 1,000), according to officials.

With the new low-cost lap top, the government expects to bridge the digital divide and to take knowledge to every Indian household.

S K Sinha, Joint Secretary in the Ministry for Education, who gave a demonstration of the device at the function, said that it will need some more fine-tuning. India expects to launch the revolutionary laptop in the market in about six months.

The low-power consuming laptop has 2 GB onboard memory with wireless Internet connectivity.

The low-cost laptop is being developed under the National Mission on Education through Information Communication Technology (ICT).

The Human Resource Development Minister also launched the ‘National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology ’ at Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati.
