With a steep rise in mobile game downloads and the revenues, India rose two places in the second quarter of 2016 in comparison to the year-ago period. The report also expects India to beat Brazil and Russia, ranked third and fourth soon given the present trend.

“Our report indicates that total game revenue in India from both local and foreign publishers is expected to reach $1.1 billion by 2020," said Shubhajit Saha, India business head for App Annie.

According to the report, revenues from strategy-based mobile games rose 140 percent over casual games in 2016. Notably, this time cash based strategy games have seen an increase in revenues from players, unlike most gaming companies that still draw the bulk of their revenues from advertisements.

App store revenue from games is estimated at $16 million in 2016, up from $12 million in 2015. The increase was due to rising smartphone use and the option of carrier billing.

The launch of Google Play prepaid vouchers and the lowering of the floor for apps and in-app purchases from 50 to 10 in 2015 also helped drive revenues.
