India is an invaluable source of revenue: Charles Wang

BANGALORE: India is an emerging source of invaluable resources. This was stated by Computer Associates International Inc. (CA) chairman and CEO Charles B. Wang while addressing a group of existing and upcoming entrepreneurs on "Entrepreneurship in Technology", in the city recently.



Mr Wang is his encouraging speech said that Computer Associates did not look at India for cheap labour but for quality professionals. "The new millennium (in India) would depend on her entrepreneurs," he added. He also said that CA was looking at joint ventures and tie-ups as part of its ongoing strategy, where CA would share its technology and market expertise as is seen in the recent tie-ups with Pentafour and Escosoft. In the last 40 years technology was used to automate back offices and to streamline processes and the next frontier of technology is less about saving money but increasing revenue. Technology must be used to illustrate what good you want to do with it.



Mr Wang also said that CA was doing a lot for children with the help of the government. It has a web site for missing children. Based on an old photograph, CA with its age progression technology, can bring out a picture on how a person would look after a certain number of years. This initiative is to help search lost or abducted children - after several years. Mr Wang said CA would start a similar one for missing children in India, only after it gets the required support from the Indian government. CA is also providing free cleft surgeries for children, called SmileTrain. SmileTrain is dedicated to solving the problem of cleft lips and palates by providing free training to the doctors and other medical professionals free surgery to indigent children and support for research. The doctors do virtual surgery several times before the actual surgery is done on the children.



He also said, "Remember that we live in a heterogeneous world and we must get away from digital thinking. "In the e-commerce business, one must remember that his competitor is just a click away and therefore you must ensure that your customer has a unique experience when he gets onto the site. You must also make sure that he remains on your site and does not go away to another site. If he dislikes your site then he will just remove your URL from his list of favorites and will never again visit your site. To start a software company, one is not required to know programming but he should understand the mechanics of that kind of a market place." He also pointed out that 97 per cent of start-up entrepreneurs fail but once they fail they will learn a lot, but it is an expensive lesson.
