FREMONT, USA: Ikanos Communications Inc., a leading provider of advanced broadband semiconductor and software products for the digital home, has achieved a major industry milestone with shipment of more than 100 million VDSL ports, making it the world leader in VDSL port shipments to date.

Ikanos also reported that its cumulative VDSL and ADSL port shipments have reached nearly half a billion, as the demand for high-speed broadband access continues to escalate.

"Our research shows that Ikanos' cumulative shipments of VDSL ports (CO and CPE) exceed that of any other supplier," said Lee Ratliff, principal analyst at the market research firm IHS.

"In addition, Ikanos has long been a leader in developing VDSL technology, including its work on vectoring, which has extended the life of carriers' copper networks and has made relatively inexpensive Fiber-to-the-Node (FTTN) architectures a competitive alternative to Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) for years to come."

Ikanos has demonstrated its superior rate-and-reach performance in a series of lab trials this year, in which its Velocity-3 and Fusiv Vx185 chipsets achieved 150Mbps aggregate performance over a 500-meter copper cable in a 192-line vectoring group.

Subsequently, Ikanos also achieved best-in-class performance of 300Mbps at 200 meters on a single copper pair with existing silicon. These achievements confirm the company's ability to offer the highest industry performance in Fiber to the Node (FTTN) and Fiber to the Distribution Point (FTTdp) access network architectures.

"Ikanos was the first silicon provider to deploy VDSL, and maintaining our technology leadership has always been a priority for us," said Omid Tahernia, CEO of Ikanos.

"As DSL standards have evolved to more advanced technologies, Ikanos has been there to drive these advancements, through our innovative and unique NodeScale vectoring and bonding that enable unparalleled scalability and provisioning flexibility. Reaching the 100 million mark in VDSL port shipments is a significant achievement for us, and reaffirms our leadership in the market and our commitment to the industry.

"This is particularly important in an era when global carriers are accelerating their transition from ADSL to VDSL in order to provide consumers with triple-play and other value-add services."

On-chip diagnostics

In June 2013, Ikanos capitalized on its technology leadership and market position, introducing inSIGHT Broadband eXperience Manager (BXM), the industry's first in-home broadband diagnostic and monitoring software solution integrated into a DSL communications processor.

Built on the company's Fusiv family of communications processors, inSIGHT changes the economics of broadband service delivery by enabling carrier personnel to diagnose and resolve complex performance and connectivity issues remotely, thereby reducing the number of service calls and truck rolls, reducing service provider Opex and improving the subscriber's quality of experience.

Where carriers have traditionally required truck rolls for problem diagnosis and repair, the in-home diagnostics on the Fusiv chip have changed the equation, providing an improved model that allows consumers to solve routine issues and reduce performance loss or downtime. With inSIGHT, Ikanos has given carriers a single-vendor solution for high-performance broadband access and problem diagnostics and resolution.
