KHARAGPUR, INDIA: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, one of India’s most prestigious and globally acclaimed technology institutes, awarded the Honoris Causa Doctorate of Science (D.Sc.) to Shiv Nadar, Founder, HCL and chairman, HCL Technologies and Shiv Nadar Foundation - for his outstanding contribution to computer hardware and software domain in the country.

The award was presented to Shiv Nadar on the 56th annual convocation ceremony of IIT Kharagpur by the Union Minister of HRD, Kapil Sibal, amidst distinguished science and technology luminaries, said a press release.

With this award, Shiv now joins the league of luminary recipients including Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Mother Teresa, Ratan Tata and Satyajit Ray, who have been conferred this award earlier.

The Honoris Causa Doctorate by IIT is meant to acknowledge and felicitate distinguished personalities in the country who have made commendable contributions in the field of science, engineering, entrepreneurship and academics.

On receiving the honour, Shiv Nadar said the IITs are responsible for positioning Indian engineering and technology prowess across the globe.

“Receiving the Doctorate of Science from the IIT Kharagpur therefore is a true honour. IIT Kharagpur is also the first buyer of any HCL product ever. My fellow founder Arjun Malhotra (chairman, Headstrong) is also an IIT Kharagpur graduate and installed IIT Kharagpur’s first HCL computers as well. It just makes coming back to Kharagpur special in a more personal sort of a way,” he said.

The IIT Kharagpur Doctorate of Science incidentally follows an earlier November 2007 Honorary Doctorate Degree in Science from the University of Madras, also for Shiv’s contribution to not just the IT industry in India, but also for his “transformation of technological culture globally”.

Shiv now increasingly spends his time on the philanthropic initiatives of the not for profit Shiv Nadar Foundation, and to map its vision for social transformation through education - to India’s higher education needs.
