IIT Kanpur invites applications for Free Online Course on Computational Science via NPTEL. The Computational Science in Engineering is a rapidly evolving field that exploits the power of computation as an approach to major challenges on the frontiers of natural and social science and all engineering fields. Further, the primary focus lies on developing problem-solving methodologies and robust tools for numerical simulation.

The goal is to present the fundamentals of scientific computing, with shortcodes to implement the key concepts. This also includes a framework for applied mathematics such as Linear Algebra, ODEs and PDEs. To understand phenomena and processes from science and engineering, these simulations require advanced skills in mathematical modelling, numerical analysis, efficient algorithms, computer architecture, software design and implementation, validation, and also visualization of results.

Who can enrol in the course?

This is a UG-PG Aerospace/Mechanical/Chemical/Civil Engineering level course. But anyone can enrol in the course. The only prerequisite is you should know basic Mathematics and programming. You also should have the desire to expand the horizon of your knowledge. Moreover, this course is a must-take for candidates wanting to enter Aerospace, Automobile, Chemical and Power Generation and Defense Industries.

Timeline of the course

This Elective course has a duration of 8 weeks. It will start from 15 February 2021 and end on 09 April 2021. If you want the certificate, you have to give a proctored exam on 24 April 2021. The last date to enrol is 15 February 2021.

Who will teach this Computational Engineering course?

Dr Ashoke De will lead the course. An Associate Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT Kanpur. He leads large scale initiatives in the modelling of turbulent reacting and non-reacting flows at IIT Kanpur. So far, he has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed articles in journals and conferences. Further, his primary research focus is the emerging field of computational mechanics with a particular interest in combustion and turbulent flows.

What will the course teach?

This is a 12-week-long course. Here’s the itinerary for the course.

W1: Linear Algebra
W2: Linear Algebra
W3: Ordinary Differential Equations
W4: Solution of Higher Order ODEs, Fourier Analysis, Fourier Integrals, Laplace Transforms
W5: Partial Differential Equations
W6: Basis of numerical analysis, errors, stability, Interpolation and extrapolation
W7: System of linear algebraic equations and eigenvalue problems
W8: Solution of ODEs

How to obtain a certificate from IIT Kanpur?

The course is free to enrol and learn. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the optional proctored exam. The fee for this exam is ₹ 1000. Also, the successful completion of the exam does not guarantee a certificate. To get a certificate, you need to get 25% from the assignments and 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100.

Final score = Average assignment score (>10/25) + Exam score (>30/75). If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will still not get the certificate even if the Final score > 40/100.

This printable certificate will carry the stamp from both NPTEL and IIT Kanpur. Further, you can enrol in the course here.
